Veteran's Day

Post by cavdad45 » Tue Nov 06, 2007 9:41 am

Monday is Veteran's Day. I am curious as to how others are celebrating the day or marking the day.

Today, my daughter's High School is having an assembly where they have invited veterans to visit and tell them of their experiences. The kids are having a special luncheon for them after the assembly where they can visit more personally after the assembly.

Sunday, our church is geared toward honoring our veterans in the Sunday morning service.

And on Monday itself, one of my past Scouts who is now a Marine will be talking to our Cubbies about their "duty to God, and my country,"

How come that most veterans have to work on the very day they are being honored?????? It does this old man good to hear that a high school has taken the time to honor our serviceman. The era that I am from didn't particularly want to know, much less honor, the serviceman who had served his country. TELL THEM ALL THANKS . WAYNE

Most of the schools in this area do something similar and I think it's awesome!

You are right about the day off thing. The only time I got Veteran's Day off was when I was a school teacher.

I'm taking Monday off as a "floating holiday"

Funny how we get MLK day off and most people can't even tell you who he was or what he stood for but we don't get Veteran's Day off #-o

I'm glad to hear the schools are recognizing the Veteran's....just don't say "God" at the ceremony :-$ that'll really get them going...such a shame.

Happy Veteran's Day guys!! God Bless you all
God Bless our brave men and women fighting to preserve our way of life!!!

I've been retired for 17 years (from civilian work that is.. I left the air force almost 4 decades ago) so the issue of "getting a day off" is kind of moot for me.

and, even though a veteran myself, I don't really see this as being a holiday to honor me.

Like most veterans, I really didn't sit at my desk at any time during secondary school and fantasize about
being a soldier (however, I can recall painting a picture of a battleship during art class in the 4th grade once and being severely
chastized by the teacher as a result. I still have no idea what caused me to paint the picture of the battleship and remember the incident only because of the teacher's response not because of the object of my artistic talents). I was just a teenager who got caught up with the events of the time.

But as I get older and wiser and more familiar with the history of our species (I have read stacks of history books in my retirement) I seem to place more and more importance on this holiday (and memorial day) as the years go by. In fact, I don't think a day goes by that I don't reflect at least briefly on the sacrifices our servicemen (current and past) have made for this nation so in that sense I think every day is veteran's day for me.

Fish doesn't smell "fishy" because it's fish. Fish smells "fishy" when it's rotten.

I was happy to find out tonight that my grandson's grade school is having an assembly for Veteran's Day and all the kids are supposed to wear red, white, and blue tomorrow.
Bill has always said he thought he should get Veteran's Day off since he is one but he never does get it off.

As an avowed Peacenic, and coming from a long line of war heroes: My Dad was awarded a Silver Star and three Bronze Stars in Italy and fought at Anzio, my Uncle, a pilot was shot down over the Phillipines. His brother was shot down over Tokyo, and both my Grandfathers were Full Bird Colonels, I to want to say thank you to all who have fought for our country. My issues are not with the brave men and women who carry out there job to defend our freedom. My issues are with the leadership, and their motives. Thank You Veterans.

Personally, Veteran's Day and Memorial Day are times that I think alot of my time in the service. It helps me remember times and places more vividly. I think alot about my old friends and what we did together. Some are gone now, others are back in the world living very different lives. It brings out a varied array of emotions that reach deep into my soul. Most good, some not so good. But it keeps alive a very unique time in my life and some very special moments that will never be repeated. Mostly, I can remember who we are; as we were then.

That was kinda rude. Read the post again. You came out of the blocks a little strong there, once again. (remember windmills anyone?)

I would have to agree with Bassackwards on that one . Have you ever watched Jay Leno and the people he interviews on the Jaywalking all stars. Most people cant even remember who the VP was during Clinton's term.

I can remember Clinton's VP, he's the one peddling the propoganda movie. I also remember his Co-President as she is running for a third term. No Veteran's in that bunch, they were overseas protesting our nation.

I was reading the headline news on my home page when one caught my interest. VANDALS DESTROY MEMORIAL TO SERVICEMAN is what it said (not a quote, but close enough ) Seema a gentleman and his wife had erected approximately 3800 flags in their yard to honor the service men that have perished in the middle east. A group of idiots ( because I don't think one person would have done it ) waited til nightime to go onto private property and kick over the flags and breaking the small wooden sticks that held the flags and destroying the memorial. They also left a message down the middle of the broken flags that said " MURDERERS '. Happy Veterans Day to you all

I'm sorry the kids used to pick on me, too. I cry myself to sleep every night because of it, after I'm done bullying people on the internet. The least you could do is have a little compassion. **sniff**
