Question about Real ID / License Renewal

Hi y’all. This may be a dumb question, but let me explain.

So last week, I went to the Haymarket RMV and applied for a Real ID because my drivers license expires in April 2022. I thought that this would also renew my license. Apparently not because my Real ID came in the mail today and the expiration date is still April 2022. So yes, I spent $25 on an ID that I’m not really going to use and will expire in two months.

So if I renew my license, will it also get the star thingy on it? Or will I also need to apply for a Real ID again?

FRom what I've read, and just now read again, the Real ID is for those who don't have, and don't want a driver's license. I think you don't need both, especialy if you have an enhanced driver's license. I'm thinking you should have asked for an enhanced driver's license. You'd have to call the place where you got your ID card from.
