River Report Problems

Post by littleriver » Wed Dec 12, 2007 8:04 pm

I've been trying to submit a river report but the report page won't allow me to enter a river name.
Fish doesn't smell "fishy" because it's fish. Fish smells "fishy" when it's rotten.

Littleriver-

I experienced the same. It would not let me enter my name. I got through the data entry portion with some difficulty with the pull down menus, but got it entered.
When I went to preview, it showed no data entered.

It isn't in your computer or ISP.

Aaron will have to troubleshoot it.

LR-

Tonight I ran a test report for the rivers. One thing to remember is that you do have to be logged in.

Mike or Aaron should reply to me that they got the test report.

I tried again this evening and found another problem.

I was and am logged in. The problem yesterday was that the
system wasn't loading in rivers to select from. River options are loading tonight.

But, for "Lewis County" there is no option for "Cowlitz River"..

However, if I go to cowlitz county then there is an option for "cowlitz river".

I've always disagreed with "county focus" in regard to fishing resource organization in this state.

I know the state regs organize everything this way but Oregon does it much differently. They ignore counties in their
regs and instead identify about 6 or 7 regions and each fishing resource is a subset of a region rather than a county. There is still a certain amount of the "overlap" that we are seeing with the cowlitz river being in both lewis and cowlitz county but only available for reports in cowlitz, but it's not as big of a problem.

Anyways, I think the problem now is that the cowlitz river flows through both Lewis and Cowlitz counties but it's only available for report writing in Cowlitz County. I'll write the report that way, but you should pass on to Aaron and the boys that 90% or more of the annual fishing trips on the cowlitz river occur in lewis county, not cowlitz county. Blue Creek and the Barrier Dam are huge attractions for guides, sporties, and sightseers. There is some Cowlitz river sport fishing activity at the mouth of the toutle (which is in cowlitz county) and some smelt activity along the cowlitz where it goes through longview during the winter and a little activity for chinook and steelhead at the mouth of the cowlitz during the summer months but the vast majority and total bulk of sport fishing activity on the cowlitz river takes place along it's shores as it flows through Lewis County.

There are lots of other examples where this might be a problem. In your area I would look at the Columbia River as it flows through NE Washington State. In the regs they place Roosevelt Lake in Stevens County (as I recall) but, in fact, this reservoir spans several counties.
Fish doesn't smell "fishy" because it's fish. Fish smells "fishy" when it's rotten.

I discovered that when writing a report for the Yakima. Aaron set it up and he has a rational reason for placing it in only one county. It might have something to due with the source (headwaters). You kind of have to hunt for the river through adjoining counties.
