Re: Northern Pike...The Effort That Keeps On Going
I think we should all bang our heads against a wall
Enough of the run around and beating around the bush, at the end of the day we all know it goes back to the money trail just like everything else! Same reason why other Pike fisheries in Washington aren't being dealt with, Yes I said it, we all know that other Pike fisheries exist that the WDFW will not even care about until a money trail leads to them. Once a bounty is put out and an effort is put in place to get rid of them then the netting will begin in these areas as well. I am sure it is coming, hopefully for now we will get to enjoy these fisheries for at least a little longer before the puppets are put in place to "regulate" the Pike!
Same old story, same old results and yet the Pike will continue to thrive! POWER TO THE PIKE!!!

Re: Northern Pike...The Effort That Keeps On Going
Whats really sad is the WDFW and the Spokesman Review are praising the job the Kalispel Tribe is doing gill netting thousands of fish in the Pend Oreille River. Here is the link Lucius provided dated April 11th,
http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2013/a ... hern-pike/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Now the ironic part is the VERY NEXT DAY, April 12th, there is a story is the same Spokesman Review praising WDFW for busting a group for gill netting. Here is that link,
http://www.spokesman.com/blogs/hbo/2013 ... -poachers/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Now don't get me wrong, I absolutely DO NOT condone poaching! It's just wrong though that one group is praised, and its jail time for another.
Gill netting should be illegal everywhere for everybody! This goes for the tribes netting salmon on the coast too!!!
Before we get into the argument that Pike are an "Invasive Species", and a Non Native Predator fish, just remember the the Kalispels are the very same group that have been stocking Non Native, predator Largemouth Bass into the Pend Oreille River for the last decade. Politics at its finest.

In that article Bill Baker says, “We know we can’t eradicate pike from the river,” said Bill Baker, WDFW district biologist. “But nobody wants them farther downstream into the Columbia. Can we assume that he has already talked to everybody? Or is he simply speaking for everybody? I know he isn't speaking for me when he makes that statement. I can supply a list of lots of people that wouldn't mund seeing pike in the Columbia.

A study performed by some peeps from South Dakota on pike suppression in a lake in Nebraska. Not too long of a read and you can skip to the end for the results and suggestions if you don't want to read the whole report (page 6 I believe). I read the whole thing because i am a pike dork!!!

Long Lake has pleny of pike and they are reproducing as I found out when I caught a small one last sunday while crappie fishing.
They have been in there for yrs. I think they finally found some good spawning areas. look up up the most recent outdoor blog @ the spokeman about the pike being caught there.

Have any of you Pike guys ever tried fishing the Spokane River?
Re: Northern Pike...The Effort That Keeps On Going
I have not, but during the summer of 2007, my son and his friend caught a small pike in the spokane river, right at the state line.

Re: Northern Pike...The Effort That Keeps On Going
Some years back I heard of a Pike caught at Riverfront park.
I have also heard of them being caught down by the falls.
Might be something to give a bit of time too.
I think the WDFW would be hard pressed to get them out of the Spokane.

Ya I believe it was last year that a kid caught a nice big one at riverfront park. I'm sue they are in there, it's just a bit hard to fish the river and find locations that they weould hold up in for very long. That's how they get into Long Lake.
