Whidbey Island bank/beach fishing

Post by mlrodoni » Tue Mar 31, 2009 8:21 am

Does anyone out there know where if any place to bank/ beach fish for salmon on the east side (Saratoga Passage) of Whidbey Island? If so with what lures or bait? Thanks.

Look within the salt water forum under the thread titled "Beach fishing" I can't remember if it only speaks to the West side of the island..... but the response from Wolverine at least, gave a lot of beaches.

there is a decent bank fishing spot at possesion beach by the bait shop, and there is actually a huge state park on the very tip of possesion point that most people don't realize. Kelp is thick, but people alway catch salmon from there.

Possession Pt State Park is only about 25 acres. It only has 3 campsites and 1 pit toilet. There is NO vehicle parking in the park itself. A little parking is available along the road, but the roads narrow with deep ditches. The park is really a water access park for kayakers who can paddle in and drag their yaks up the beach. The beach is rubbley and has some big horse clams on it (the kind that you have to grind because they are so tough). Fishing is ok but the kelp bed tangles up most hooked fish. Around the corner is the "Boxcar" then the Possession Pt Bait Co where you can buy live herring and fish them under a float in front. Then next to that is a county marine park. The area is mostly private property with owners who don't tolerate trespassing fishermen. A lot of them won't tell you to move along. They just call the Island County Sheriff Dept who will gladly write you a ticket for trespassing on private property.

guys you are right and wrong. Swede posted the pictures of the "park" in question. It is there. It is called Possesion Point park, and I have been there several times. There are NO road signs for it, but it you head to the public boat launch, and take a right on franklin road (headed south) a few hundred feet before the boat launch (as if you were going to the bait company) and just continue about a 1/4 mile up that road you will find a bona fide park. You have to walk down a road, and what looks like someone's yard (but in actuality is a state ranger house) with access to the beach.

I know people on whidbey can be turds about beach access, but I would give this spot a look. If it is not a park why 1. does it have a state parking lot? and 2. have a sign calling it a park?

Instead of just dismissing it outright, go and take a look, that is how I found it. I saw it on an old map or something and decided to check it out. I am not telling anyone to go trespass.

If I am wrong, please let me know.

When fishing from shore for Pinks w/ buzz bombs do you just cast as far as you can and retrieve? Is it worth it to fish from shore on Whidbey now? If so what species and what should I use. Thanks.

I wouldn't go right now.

Cast out and retrieve for pinks. Pink buzz bombs. Not until august/september though
