That's why I fish Canada exclusively for Kings, Coho, Sockeye, and Chum. I find the price for a King stamp and the licesne to be hefty, but I can fish for halibut, lings, and salmon and avoid this Washington state dilemma. Fishing for Kings in Canada is fun, challenging, and worthwhile. One of my favorite areas is Bere Pt. on Malcolm Island. On the outgoing tide in July and August this fishery is fantastic for wild chinook. I also do well around Double Bay for Kings on the downrigger in 60-90 feet of water. I was up there in 2005 and we just nailed the sockeye. I think the limit was 4 per person per day and we had 3 guys on the SeaSportXL24 and had our limit in a little less than one hour. You couldn't keep them off. The same goes for coho when they come through in huge numbers in August and September right thru Johnstone Strait and Queen Charolotte Strait. I've had huge fish well over 30 pounds up in around Port Hardy and the Deserter Group. It's all about Canada; I've given up on trying to dance around the reg changes and closures fishing salmon in the state of Washington. One just need to look at the Lake Washington sockeye fishery to see how crazy fishing here really is - give Canada a try - you'll be glad you did.

Wow! that is an eye-opening article. i might have to wait until next year to invest in my salmon gear. i have always done charters or buddies boats, but, since i live over here more and more, was going to invest in some salmon gear. looks like the seasons are going to be small if at all. thanks for the article! might have to try the canadian fisheries cuttkiller!

Link didn't work, but I can tell from looking at it when it says "Few salmon may reduce ocean fishing" that it has something to do with the poor ocean conditions for fish. I wouldn't doubt that they make this years season a little more restrictive.

You got the gist of it. It's a short little read that spells problems for us with low California returns and WA returns to boot. This year is going to be more restrictive, on top of an already restrictive system...ya gotta do what ya gotta do to keep the fisheries alive.

California returns have been horrible over the past few years. A few years before that they were pretty healthy. Now the are considering completely shutting down the fisheries to protect some stocks in certain systems...

Link worked for me. Good article shawn. So this is what you were talking about.
I hope they keep to the program this year and for a couple years until things get a lot better. Sacrifice a little now for the greater good of the fishery later. I'm all for it.
