we got them about equally on herring and green and white squids.

Nice silvers....
Crossing that bar is pretty wild out there. Most dangerous water in the world according to the Discovery Channel I think. They did a show on the top 10 most dangerous waters and the Columbia river bar was #1...

Three years ago my wife and I moored our boat at Ilwaco and fished everyday for 32 days straight. It was our first trip and it will be our last. The rewards did not compensate for the daily pounding. We fished inside and out and everywhere it was rough. We did manage to catch fish but we have fished so many other areas with at worst, having the same amount of luck. The conditions and the combat fishing were horrible at best. Fishing to me should be fun, not a battle. That being said, the crabbing is fantastic. Check the regs – the Columbia River at its mouth has the largest crab limit in the State. The size limit is smaller and the daily limit is second to none. What is really nice is that it’s easy to get your daily limit and you don’t have to be in the river’s main current to catch them. If anyone would like to know our “honey hole” just send me a “PM.”

when you get outside of the bar into the ocean, theres no such thing as combat fishing. fishing bouy 10 is crazy though. in the ocean currents dont affect you to much either. its basicly puget sound, but it actually has fish, and the waters a little rougher ]
I failed to compliment you on your silvers. It looks and sounds as if you really enjoyed your trip. I did not try to downplay your success. I just wanted to express my opinion of Ilwaco. Yes the combat fishing is on the inside and no - I would never compare the ocean to Puget Sound for water conditions. I am glad you enjoy it but it's not for me. There is a reason the Columbia River Bar is called the graveyard of ships.
