Salmon Setups for Beginners Sub $100 setup.

Post by triehl27 » Wed Apr 10, 2013 4:11 pm

So I recently attended a local fishing seminar, and I spent, WAY to much on a Rod and Reel for Salmon Fishing, $99 on the Reel and $280 on the custom 9'6" Rod. Very excited. Til I thought of how many beginners were at the seminar, and how Almost $400 for a rod and reel was a bit excessive. And knowing this year I will have at least 4 beginners on the boat throughout the season, and I my self am no old hand.

So I started looked around to find some less expessive setups.

Here's what I found:

ROD: Daiwa Wilderness 8'6 - 9'6 available at Outdoor Emporium for $15ea. 12-20lbs, 14-25lbs and 15-30lbs
REEL: Used Penn Levelwinds, So many available, through craigslist, Ebay, etc. $15-50 depending on what is available. Currently I have 2 Penn 310 GTi's and Daiwa 47LC Each was about $30 or less, the Penns I got off craigslist are new.
LINE: I prefer P-Line in Hi Vis Yellow. I have 2 reels spooled with it in the 30lbs test, and 1 spooled with Big Game 30lbs Green. The P-Line seems to have less memory after only a week we'll see. About $4-5 a reel to have it spooled, at .05yds for the 30lbs. 25lbs and less is $.03 yds.

So there it is, I set three Poles Up at less then $60ea. I have already pulled in 1 Blackmouth on the set up and they work great. So if you are just starting out, and want your own setup, this is a great starter.

One other thing I have learned this year. Danielson has out Ball Bearing swivels, for $1.49 per 2. A great alternative to the Expensive Sampos. I clip the cheap snaps off and replace them with 50lbs Duolock snaps. Cheap insurance and I trust the duolocks over the cheap metal tab snaps.

My Setup: 2 soft Glo beads then to a size 5 Danielson ball bearing swivel. I leave about a 1/2" tail and superglue my knot (Just a drop otherwise it's gets everywhere), while it is setting but still tacky I slide one of the soft glow beads over the knot and tuck the tail through it also. The glue secures the knot, tail, and bead all together protecting the knot. The second bead acts as a further bumper. With the Duo Clip on the swivel all I have to do is clip in whatever rig I am using. Simple, fast, and INCREDIBLY strong.

Save up for tackle... That's where the big bucks comes in, cause you can't just be satisfied with one green lure, they're like Potato chips, can't have just one, or Pokemon, Gotta get um all...
