Northwest Fishing Reports

I will put this in the Saltwater forum because it mostly applies here,, but there is some carry over to freshwater fishing also.
As I begin to look into salmon fishing I see a lot of what I would call "Gimmick" stuff. I am refering to varioius squid and things that either come with battery operated blinking or constant light emiting mechanisms, one of which even tells you to stuff a glow stick in it. Some of this is also available in freshwater tackle.
There are a few battery operated lurers which claim to emit sounds to attract fish

So do any of you have experience with this stuff? Or is it bogus??

No. Don't go down that road. Standard hootchies (plastic squid) with some smelly jelly does the trick. No baitfish has a blinking light or some shining body, stay simple and the normal stuff works better anyways...

I think those kind of lures are designed to catch more fishermen than fish.

I personaly agree with Easy Limits.I have fell sucker to these lures designed to catch fishermen,you cant go wrong to often with a flasher,hoochies,and a little herring,and if you did buy some and want recop some of your losses there is allways Ebay.I would call those battery operated lures bogus.

I agree don't get suckered into buying tackle that is overpriced and has a lot of bells and whistles. Keep it simple and you will catch plenty. Look at it this way, all of the old normal lures have worked for god knows how long so why change what works. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

right on Sam! I've caught millions (well a bunch of them commercial) and years on the sound hoochies and smelly jelly all the way. For kings BIG plugs.

Im selling a 6 inch shad that is battery operated , anglers can simply make a cast and have a seat .. This bad boy will swim all by its self untill a fish takes it , once the fish is on the bait you will know , it also comes with a upgrade feature of making a screeming sound to notify the angler that they have a fish on .. all this for a one time offer of 3 easy payments of $19.99 per month ..LOL just kidding guys .. stick to one rule if you dont see the pros using it and winning tourneys it's all a fluke .. Just reading the post for the last couple days. I agree with all of you; Stick to the basics. The flasher / Hoochies combo with krill or other liquid scent attractants work well as does a simple cut plug herring behind a dodger. Coyote or Coho killer type lures also work well, have been around for many years, and are proven producers. Trolled behind a Hot Spot or your favorite flasher and you’re on your way. I can't believe how much junk these sporting goods stores are selling in the fishing tackle sections. Keep it simple. Good luck..

I have a couple battery operated lures, lures w/ small glo sticks and plugs that you put pills made of fish flavor thats emits a scent trail. Most of them I get from relatives for X - mas or if I happen to find them on sale. They are all great lures to add to your collection and to show to friends. However I wouldnt use them, very cool to look at but they are more collector items than fishing lures. I have used the bobbers that you put a glow stick in and they are great for night fishing.

This is off topic but they have this new salt water braided fishing line that is scented and I really want to try that. Also they have these new markers that you can color your lures diffrent colors with that also have scent in them. Anybody have any experience with these? I really like they idea of both these products but Im afraid they might fall under the same category of electric lures.

I have tried a lot of weird fishing lures that are old. One that is battery powered is the "Fishin' Genie from the 50's and another newer one that is simular is the Trolling bobber that you can get on ebay or the web at www.trollingbobber.com. They both are battery powered and can take your bait/lure out for hundreds of yards. I use most of the stuff I collect at least once.... Helicopter lures never worked for me but the flying lure worked great as well as the worm that rolls upand the one that bobs up and down on a bungee line....Lures that light up are fine if you are fishin' deep...Looks like a squid....I always like taking the old and weird fishin' But sometimes she has other things to do....

If you can afford them, E-Chips don't hurt. That doesn't mean you can't catch fish without them. I prefer to use them, but that's just me. Of course everything still gets smothered in smelly jelly.

What do E-Chips do?

They have this crystal thing inside them that rattles around when attached to the lure of your choice. They say that the crystal action represents the electrical pulses sent out by a swimming fish.

I didn't know that it was a chrystal, but like Ipod sayd, there's something in it that creates a tiny electrical pulse that mimics that of a small living organism. Some flashers come with them, but they also sell just the chip itself, which you can add to any lure of your liking.

One lure that is amazing for all types of salmon is a bait buster. Trust me, this things stinking work!!

I got one of those at a garage sale and didn't know what it was..... Gotta try it.
