Salmon Season '09 Thread

Post by A9 » Sun Jul 19, 2009 4:16 pm

Figured since we have a crab and lingcod thread for sharing pictures and reports of our successes in 2009, we should get one up and going for salmon as well since many of us target salmon...

Lets get it rolling:bounce:

Throw pictures up, share stories, whatever.

seems like the seasons starting off very slow. was over at Outdoor Emporium talking to some of the guys there and apparently this past week hasn't been the best.

guess I'll give it another week or two!

great thread!!! there should be some great stories on this. hit up edmonds yesterday. crazy amount of fishermen. around 30 or so i think. didnt exactly count, but if you were to look down the side of the pier, you could continuesly see poles going up and down fishing for kings. i think there were 4 kings taken from edmonds that day i was there. saw a individual catch a fairly nice sized ling, but didnt land it. hook came out before they could get it into the ring net.

Had a sea lion take my first salmon of the year in area 11. Posted my story in the reports section.....
One hell of a fight once the hook came out of the fish and stuck into the sea lion.

Hit up Indianola (area 10) last Sunday and did some fishing off the pier. Cuaght a couple of small hatcheries that got releades a ffew days prior. Then caught a 18incher chinook and about a hour later caught a 20 1/2 #. All caught off buzzbomb. Was a good day even if no keepers. hitting up point no point form the shore this weekend.

Lady friend and I were at the Edmonds waterfront for dinner last night. Reservations at 8 and got there at 7:30. Took a walk out on the pier and on the way out a guy was walking off the pier carrying a big sack of fresh out of the fish king eggs. Farther out on the pier was a cookie cutter 18 pound king. A lot of commotion out on the end of the pier so we walked out and saw what everyone was buzzing about. One of the regular pier rats was just finishing cleaning a king that was probably 34-36 pounds. Biggest king that I've seen there in several years. Talked to a guy that I knew there and he said that the fished was hooked 15 feet from the pier and swam up and along the pier about 40 feet. The fish was quickly netted. Total time? About 30 seconds! The fish probably hadn't figured out yet that she was in trouble. I sort of wished that I would have brought a rod along but I was fishing for something else!

There are some fish out there in Area 9...

Not a ton, but work hard, find the bait and there's some out there...

Both smaller lures and bigger ones have been working...Coho killers have taken their share as have bigger Coyotes and Ace Hi Fly's....

I hit Area 7 the last two days, (21st-23rd) mornings (5am) and evenings, and nada. I talked to about 5 other anglers, and no one had seen or heard of a keeper being caught the last couple days. One guy even ran into WDFW on the 22nd, and said they hadn't seen any fish. Funny, I was out for the crab opener (15th) and heard of four fish caught 14-15th. The Bellingham derby did well though, two weeks ago. I thought I heard the top three fish were all in the 30's, with the top being 39lbs.?? Weather was great and water calm. I'm sure there are more fish to come.....
I have caught many fish in my life. The most exciting? The next one.....

Not many fish in the bay yet. We hit this one just at daylight working a big bait ball. After it got light the seals showed up and were working the bait ball too..........

Cool thread!

Wish I had something to post, but I've been working Area 10 hard with little success since it opened.

Let's hope the bite gets going and some fish show!

That is a nice fish, but this is a family website and the finger could've been blurred out...we'd all realize what you were doing....Thanks for the salute...back at ya!
