Don't underestimate the bright pink Barbie pole

WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — A backyard angler has bagged the state’s record channel catfish using a 2½-foot hot pink Barbie Doll rod and reel.

David Hayes caught the record-breaking fish from a private pond while fishing early this month with his granddaughter, Alyssa, 3. The 21-pound, 1-ounce catfish measured 32 inches long — 2 inches longer than the Barbie Doll fishing pole.

The story of the little Pink Pole reminded me of one I bought for my granddaughter when she was only 1 year old. There is a story and photo about her and her pink pole in "Tackle Box Tales" titled "Fishing in Grampa's Boat."

David Hayes, guy who caught record breaking fish, will be on Jay Thomas Show today. It is on Sirius Satellite Radio, Sirius Stars channel 102, starts at 12pm. It is a funny show. But I saw where this guy refused to fly to New York to be interviewed. He said catching a fish isn't worth being on TV, guess he is a Satellite Radio guy?

Ya. He is on Sirius now. Talking about mud turtles and fish. That pond is in his backyard. Caught it on crickets.

No you dont need to spend $500.00 to catch a fish and the pole doesn't have anything to do with the skill of the angler .. Case in point I know a guy who uses G Loomis rods for perch and blugill .. The reason behind it has to do with the sensitivity and comfort of the rod .. That's what your paying for when you making expensive purchases .. Second there was a greater chance at missing the fish of a lifetime by using improper gear , in this case the lil girl was very lucky to be standing next that fish .. I wouldn't encourage people to cut corners on fishing gear based on this story ... I'm glad she landed this fish because that's a memory that she will never forget :-) ... =d> BBD

Hey, I think there really is something to this Barbie pole thing. I took my kids to a fishing derby in Monroe last year and a little girl next to us caught a huge trout on one. I thought it was the funniest thing I ever saw so I snapped this picture:

The trick is Shes wearing pink jacket that matches her rod.I dont have any color cordinated gear.Remember you must wear pink to make the Barbie Pole work.

I bet that fish had 20 year old dirt in it's blood. catfish is not one of my favorite eats. I get he disrupted the whole eco system of that little pond.
I won't kill anything less than a meal
