Clamming Puget Sound

Post by Dustin07 » Sun Feb 15, 2009 7:29 pm

Is it safe as far as pollution goes? I noticed there are a couple beaches (like Owens, Point Defiance) that are open year round.... what does this mean? Is there a good clam presence there? WDFW site says "not much is known about the clams here".... odd?....

We went Razor Clamming opening weekend in Ocean Shores and had a great time. Got two limits easy. LOTS OF PEOPLE. Everyone was friendly and having fun getting knocked over by the waves though.

As always, check the shellfish hot line before you harvest any clams in Puget Sound. If there is no advisory in effect, you are good to go.

I do my clamming at Possesion off Whidbey Island or even Sarratoga Passage. The water is way cleaner over there.I used to clam Picnic Point but not there either.Swede knows his stuff. The further north you go the better they taste.I;ve eaten them potty clams before.NOT FUN....Always call the Red Tide Hotline first.Take aerator stones and a pump for the cig lighter. The more air they have in the buckets the longer they stay fresh and alive.I put a lil corn meal in my buckets to clean them out.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

You are semi close to where I live.. I personally saw 2 women put in some serious booty at Tolmie State park..I was just messing around w/a stick and kicked over at least a pound of some steamers..I couldnt harvest since I wasn't licensed, but I know now where to go.hope this helps.

I agree Shawn. Also, if you haven't been to the Central Market in mill Creek, they have an amazing display of live clams for sale in several tanks. There are maybe 6 kinds of live clams to choose from and they were reasonably priced. They also have live Dungeness in a large tank for 4.99 per pound. The average crab weighed about 2 pounds according to the sign. So that was a screamin deal for sure. Check out the Central Market if you want fresh clams that have already purged the sand.

Mutual fish and Uwajimaya have mass live tanks.Uwajimaya especially .Its worth going to see.If you really want to clam near Seattle I'll suggest Picnic Point in Edmonds.I've clammed up there and its pretty clean.Mukilteo is another good place. One other would be Faye Bainbridge State Park.
