Winter Crabbing Results, Anyone?

Post by Dave » Sun Nov 23, 2008 12:15 pm

Just curious to hear if anyone has been out crabbing this winter 2008 season. I am personally interested in Area 9 but any info would be great. Thanks.

It's been good out there for crab from what I've heard. Was on the water the last two days, but didn't drop any pots. Will be crabbing Wednesday thru Friday, so I'll have a firsthand report then....Saw quite a few pots out there....Are Indians crabbing right now?

Blackmouth was slow today, steelhead are showing up on the beaches of Area 9....

If the weather stays nice, I'll be out tomorrow and tuesday.....I'll definitely post my results. Now I'm thinking of putting in at Ft. Casey so I can troll for some salmon.....

We hit up area 10 on Sunday, right off the Magnolia bluffs and had marginal results at best. Salmon University mentioned that the area had good crabbing in 10 to 25' of water, but why would one believe the experts? We started in 35 to 40' of water and caught a few keeper reds and had no dungies in the pots. We moved closer to shore and put down in 25 to 30' of water and had slightly better results with one keeper dungie a few undersized dungies and several more keeper reds. We would have moved them in further but ran out of time, guess we shouldn't have doubted the info. If I hit up this area again I'll use rings and put down in 10 to 15' of water. Looking forward to getting out there again and will hit the Alki Beach area and see how that goes.

Great day on the water today. Calm and sunny....:sunny:

To bad I didn't get any Dungies. Quite a few Red Rock, some big'uns too. 20-45' of water. Area 6. Maybe tomorrow will be better... :-"

Awful crabbing out there in Area 9 today. Set em out around 2pm yesterday, picked em up around 9am, nada, lots of sunstars too....

It's rough out there in Area 9 right now. South wind is kicking up some good waves/whitecaps....

I did manage to get a limit of crabs pretty easily walking around at low tide last night after dinner. in hip waders and with a lantern.....Lots of females to weed through, but did find 5 legal males in under an hour. Lots of fun to wade around though! Even saw a big salmon/steelhead just hanging out in the eelgrass in about a foot of water. He didn't even budge when I got right up next to him...

We Crab all over the north sound from Richmond Beach north:-# we dropped/pots just before we go out and chase Blackies and this winter 2nd to none and using the Ace hauler as well for old farts! LOL:-$
Many have been over sized and we did swell at Apple Tree and Indianola of late.
We rebar all the pots in the winter due to weather and tides bottom line they love fresh (Salmon parts) for pigs:-# a natural presentation and do not use (red building bricks) to weight your pots they think its a relative caught!
Clipped down rigger balls work as well but we love rebar and rinse each and all with the fresh water wash down system on each pull.
Many think stink and worse is best NOT!:colors: Leave the kitty and chicken litter at home:colors:
Fresh Salmon parts to finish I have tons of pictures of over sized crabs and shrimp but lean on posting a Pic= Viking are dull pencils at the computer gig but swell at Killing stuff! LOL:compress:

I have noticed as of late that we are getting some serious seal issues with salmon carcasses. We tend to do better with (of all things) trout and carp. Trout was the consistent producer and it minimized pot damage from seal attacks while still packing in the crab.

Looks like you finally figured out how to post pics...

The Thumb (my partner in crime as many of the forumers know) has some octagonal danielson pots that sustained damage from seals. They were tearing the lids off of the bait cages and destroying the side ties.

Your crab are cute little buggers....

Im not really sure what the picture of the shrimp pot is for, but thats not what he was using.

He has 2 because they were gifts, which we let his son use. Better to let the kid fish his own pots than to tell him he has to share the pots we have. They are decent, but I wouldn't reccomend them.

My 3 are welded steel round pots from TNT, 2 door with 10 lb rebar sections as weight. Absolutely swear by round pots (crab have a tendency to stay on target with round pots, where they may walk away from the corner of a square one because the scent dissipates due to the larger distance from the bait) and wouldn't fish anything else. Also a big proponent of light single floats so the buoyancy of the float doesn't cause the pot to drift in strong current.

Swedefish4life1.....Nice summer crab!! Have you had much luck this winter?? Do you do anything different in the WINTER? (shallower, diff. bait, ect.) Have you had luck lately?? I have been trying in area 6 with little luck and could use some tips on WINTER crab locations (I think I'm good on the pots). Thanks man....

Wow, #10 rebar pots. At 5 1/4 pounds per foot those suckers must be heavy!

If anyone can, with these upcoming low tides right after dinner (8-10pm low tides, some as low as -3), head out with some waders, a headlamp/flashlight/lantern, bucket, and a rake. Lots of dungies will be parked around the eelgrass in the tidelands just riding out the low tide, it's a real hoot to wander around knee deep water and picking up crabs left and right. Lots of females b/c its up shallow, but you'll find some legal males in the mix. It's a real adventure and usually pretty productive. Lots of fun for the little ones too! Bundle up, it's cold out there at night!
