Transom Question... Maybe?

I am calling this a transom question because I don't know what else to call it.
I purchased my boat last year from Cabelas and I love it! I am slowly taking time to add accessories such as downriggers and what not, but I had a question about this back rail and my boat and it's functionality or lack thereof.
First of all, what should I call this railing?
Second question, does this serve a specific purpose? It seems like it should but I am not sure it does.
I am attaching a few pictures to maybe help provide some different views.
Your help would be much appreciated!

motor well lip railing?
It may serve a structural function to some degree, although I think the entire motor well structure does.

I vote structural element along with a thick enough piece of “rail” material that would support mounting whatever accessory one might want.

It keeps that big wall of water from joining you when you have to back off on the throttle quickly.

Tis a wave board and does as Bodo said, keeps water IN the splash well rather than joining you in the boat. You do not want to remove or modify it.

That makes sense!
Everything else does too. I would be less curious about its purpose if it didn't have the top "rail" on that section with the groove in it. I was hoping that it was more purposeful and it was specifically made like that for some attachments, but it doesn't appear to be the case!

That groove is there to collect water, which grows slime, and to make it harder to clean. :-)

Hahahahaha, pretty much. A couple rod holders for flat lining off the back would be nice...…...

Check with your boat manufacturer . There might be accessories that utilizes that groove. Like rod holders, cutting boards. Grill stand.
