Air horn on the water....

Post by The Quadfather » Sat Oct 28, 2017 12:11 pm

Man, just came off the water from Lake WA. Feel like I needed to make a public service announcement.
I can't say how glad I was to have an airhorn on my vessel this AM. Yes, of course it is a regulation to have some form of sounding device on your boat, but I'm sure many people do not.
It was so darn foggy, I couldn't believe it. And fog usually lifts in my experience. Not today, from 0800 til return to launch at 11:45, it was one dangerous place to be in a boat.

Keep an airhorn in your boat. Great to be able to give a little 'heads-up tap' to your oncoming vessels. :-" :-"

I have also been on Lake Wa when it was completely socked in. First I played ‘don’t look’ using my electric motor so I could hear anyone and to see if I could correctly guess my direction and position. Nope. Looked at my GPS maps and I was 90* off. Did not hear any other boats (they were smarter!) for hours. But then it was a barge while the fog was lifting!

Many years ago in dense fog early one morning I used a compass to get me to my fishing spot on Lake Washington. Went nw for a bit/mile or more, to go around the island, then n for a bigger bit, couple miles or so, to get along the island. By the time I could see the western shoreline I was within 100 yards of the bridge where I wanted to start fishing.

Now I cheat with the chart on the HDS units. [biggrin]

Fog is scary. Without my GPS and Navionics cards I would be lost lately. Still hate driving in it though no matter what the speed.
