Upgrade from 25hp to 40hp jet - feedback
Hi guys
Have a Sylvan 15 feet long boat with a Yamaha 25hp on it (2007 - 2008 with 100 - 200h max I would think)
Thinking to upgrade the outboard to a Yamaha 40hp jet (model F40JEHA)
the main reason for upgrade is to be able to hit more rivers in the area
A few questions for you guys
1. Disadvantage on lakes and puget sound running a jet?
2. Should I consider getting a prop lower unit as well for it?
3. Where to order a outboard online? Any sites you guys recommend? saves on sales tax and others?
4. If I decide to sell my existing, how much should I be asking for? It's 2007 - 2008 with 100 - 200 hours max.
Attaching some pictures
Highly appreciate your feedback.
Thank you

Re: Upgrade from 25hp to 40hp jet - feedback
I have a 15 foot Klamath with a 50 HP jet. It pushes two people on rivers very well, three, not so much. Having a jet is so worth it on our rivers, you'll love it! And a 15 foot boat is easy to hop out and push on/off sand bars with one person. Just watch hitting stuff because your hull bottom is light weight and will dent easily if you ground it hard on a gravel bar.
I've also used my boat on lakes and salt, you'll need to get a large bucket to flush the motor. And you'll get used to the different way a jet handles on still water. First time I pulled a 360 spin was an eye opener (and a real pucker alert). But once you get used to it you'll have a blast doing "Tokyo Drifts" with your boat.

Hi Mike. Thanks for your reply
Do you have the tiller motor? Do you feel the need of a trolling motor as well?
Not sure what you mean by a large bucket to flush it, what about using the hose and adapter?
Anyone could recommend a place to buy? I'm looking for a cash deal even. Pm if anything.
Thanks again for all the feedback

Yes, you'll need a trolling motor, jets do not troll well at all. Plus, always good to have a backup.
I'm not aware of a jet flush adapter, I use a giant plastic storage bin to flush my jet after saltwater use.

Do you see any problems on adding too much weight on the back of the boat this way? With me sitting in the back it already feels unbalanced
Is a 6hp good enough for trolling?
Do you have the tiller version?
Thank you

Re: Upgrade from 25hp to 40hp jet - feedback
Should also have mentioned that I already have a electric motor in front, a motor guide.
It's saltwater rated, and does very well on slow troll on still water and sound like up to 1,7 - 1.8 miles.
it can go faster but not too fast I guess and would take a ton of juice.
I'm pretty sure it will have no power up river
Should I still consider a gas trolling motor on the back?
Before I needed the 25hp to troll only for silvers if I needed to go over 2 - 3 mph
Thank you

My boat has a mid-boat side console. It's featured on a few of our videos:gottidave wrote:Should also have mentioned that I already have a electric motor in front, a motor guide.

I run an 8 hp kicker, and also a bow mount electric sometimes. Trust me, you'll want that kicker. Puget Sound coho you should be trolling up to 3.5-3.8 mph. River backtrolling, you want more juice then the electric will give. And no, it won't be too much weight. Have your passenger sit forward if it's an issue. Your boat should have about what, a 500-600 pound passenger capacity? The motor won't be over a hundred, especially if you find a used two stroke 6hp.

Whats the Coast Guard rating for that boat as far as weight and horse power? If there is no Coast Guard sticker, then I would contact the MFG or Google it.
If it already feels unbalanced, then adding even more weight in back could be very dangerous.

Re: Upgrade from 25hp to 40hp jet - feedback
The rating for the boat is 40hp motor and 4 people or 582 pounds or something close to
The 40hp is 60 pounds more than existing 25hp plus trolling 6hp extra 60 to 70 pounds

Re: Upgrade from 25hp to 40hp jet - feedback
Might just need to change the weight distribution then. Maybe move batteries forward or something like that.
Re: Upgrade from 25hp to 40hp jet - feedback
Keep in mind that the max weight rating includes people PLUS gear, batteries, trolling motors, main motor, fuel and anything else that isnt built into the basic boat.
So if you had 4 guys that each weigh 180 pounds on board, thats a total of 720 pounds and you would be over weight without any motor or fishing gear or batteries or anything else on board.
Your 40 hp yamaha probably weighs in close to 200 lbs. Add in any batteries that probably weigh 40-50 pounds each, fuel tank and gas, troling motor, fishing gear, ice chests, etc etc.
You could easily be pushing the limits with just one skinny guy on board - not counting the big fish you are after

Re: Upgrade from 25hp to 40hp jet - feedback
That's my worry
And your totally right, I even forgot the big fish
In 240 pounds so I guess I could lose 40 easy to make room for the new motor. That would make wife happy too

Re: Upgrade from 25hp to 40hp jet - feedback
No way am I explaining how the Coast Guard calculates boat weight limits or she would be all over me about dieting even worse than she is now

Before 12/1/2011 the USCG "assumed average weight per person" was 160lbs, after that date, the weight was increased to 185lbs. National average weight for men per CDC is 195lbs.

They obviously didn't check with me before they came up with that average!
