Bow Mount Shaft Length

I have a 15ft v-hull aluminum boat and I found a good deal for a motor with a 48" shaft. I'm wondering if it's too long. I heard the length should be determined by the distance from top of bow to waterline then add 20" or so. Problem is I don't know where my water line is, relatively new boat. Anyone know if the motors are adjustable? Can I shorten it if need be? Thanks

I have a motorguide on a gatormount, and with the gatormount you can raise and lower the shaft to whatever height you want. As long as you can adjust the height on whatever mount you're using, you should be fine. Also if you are out on a rough day, it's nice to be able to put the bow mount down deeper than normal, because the rocking of the boat will pop the motor out of the water every time you go over waves.

48" is a relatively short shaft. I use a 60" on my boat. Like the person above said...you don't have to sink the shaft all the way. You can let some of it stick up if you have too long of one.

Have a 15' Smokercraft Lodge. After consulting with Minnkota customer service opted for 54'' shaft. Works great except in extremely rough water where the prop will come out of the water. Highly recommend the MinnKota PowerDrive with the Co-Pilot.

I am looking for a bow mount as well, and my idea is to get the longest one possible for my cash. Are there any problems with having a bow mount that is too long?

I forgot about this post, I bought a minn. powerdrive 50 thrust. with the 54". Just got it mounted, had to build another deck but should be ready to go. I don't think there is such thing as too short now that I know you can raise and lower the shaft.

I keep hearing size matters? As long as It stays in the water don't worry. Get as much power as you can. You will find you battery life is greater if you are not running at full throtle. If you can get the 55 lbs of thrust you won't be sorry when the wind suddenly catches you in the middle of Lake Washingmachine.
