I grew up on a freestone river and as a kid used to flip rocks over and bait my #8 hook with them. Worked well on cutt and rainbows.
Mark as far a fly patterns some cased caddis patterns look pretty similar, you could use dark brown and mixed gray dubbing with a black head and it would work pretty well I bet.

That is a good thought. I'll go through my bookmarks of fly patterns web pages and look for a cased caddis. Some of the "stick building" case caddis do look similar. Thanks.

I tie a very convincing helgramite pattern. It is type of gold ribbed hares ear, however instead of using elk hair I use bear hair as a wing casing. Then I use grey squirrel and rabbit as the dubbing. then add a soft hackle. It looks ggod enough that one fell off my vest and my wife tried to stomp it to death. Thank goodness she didn't hook herself.
