Was that you at the mouth of the creek in the afternoon? Teaching her how to fish a float for the first time? If so I was next to you, missed a couple of bobber downs. Big guy with goatie. Good to hear your teaching paid off for her! congratsHOOKEDONFISHING wrote:LMAO . Her catching her first Steel is going to work out good for me. did she hook hers in the same spot? I missed two there right before I left. The only thing I managed to catch that day was a seriously burned head.

To quote Russell wilson, the separation is in the preparation. Learn all you can sometimes its as simple as leader lenght or hook size or the your jig/corkie color may be off a shade. Experiment and keep a journal. For some people it comes easy, the rest of us have to work at it. Read bill herzoggs books, and Dave vedder has a good book on float fishing. Luck is good, but to me luck is simply preparation meeting oppurtunity. Keep working at it and it will pay off.Mordalphus wrote:I fished in sultan from the bank and saw 2 fish caught before 6am. A bright chrome hen from the bank and the second one was a nice chinook from a drift boat. Then nothing.
I still have not caught a single fish out of a river. I'm starting to develop an eye twitch.

Not only have I read every damn book published by amato books, I have been copying the other Sunday morningers that have been catching fish. R. White jig head red rabbit fur small piece f pprawn. There's been an old guy occasionally that will throw me a helpful hint once in a while.spoonman wrote:To quote Russell wilson, the separation is in the preparation. I'm just waiting patiently, haha, I've got nothing better to do at 4 in the morning on a Sunday, so I'll just keep going. I'm starting to like the torture.

Beautiful fish. Good going.
Re: Skykomish; how high is too high?
While thaty fish is pretty cool looking, I'm more interested in your rod you've got there. Is it a custom build? Do tell.

Re: Skykomish; how high is too high?
I actually just got this rod, that was the 2nd fish hooked and first to the beach. I'm pretty sure its the factory model not completely sure as I bought from a older timer that never got the chance to use it. I would say i got a awesome deal at 150
Its a sage ct 290, rated 6-15. A little heavier of a rod then i like for drift fishing but it is a very nice rod, and with my revo sx it is Lighttt! I would be lying if i said i didn't dig the weird cork handle on top either.

Very nice rod fnf. Anything sage is quite spendy, is say u got a hangin deal.
Re: Skykomish; how high is too high?
I love my sage fly rods, but haven't had the opportunity to see their gear stuff. I think they discontinued them, because I can't find them anywhere.fear_no_fish wrote:I actually just got this rod, that was the 2nd fish hooked and first to the beach. Re: Skykomish; how high is too high?
Both Sage and Redington did some gear rods a couple years back, I have a Redington for float and jig fishing, hands down the nicest rod and most fave to handle. Extremely light, when paired with my CI4 I can fish most of the day. That's something coming from a cripple. I wish they were still making them, I'd have a couple more. When playing a fish mine has a very parabolic bend and give an almost fly rod feel. I've often felt a fly blank would be the way to start on a jig/float rod with the real technology hitting the fly rods first then spilling into the gear world. Loomis's new gear stuff is coming straight from his fly gear. Let me qualify, Northfork, not Shimano.....
Build a man a fire and he's warm for the night. Light a man on fire and he's warm the rest of his life!

Re: Skykomish; how high is too high?
If i understood what i was reading correctly the sage gear rods that were done last, including mine are all the actual fly blanks, just tied up as gear rods. A lot of guys i met on the river are using fly blanks and spey to make their drift and float rods and they all say its the way to go. It defiantly seems to be the way river poles are going.
Re: Skykomish; how high is too high?
I twisted up a barrier dam 14 foot free drifting rod on a spey blank, and it works great. My understanding is that some of the first loomis rods were invented because he put gear stuff on a fly blank to get that soft light feel.
There are sometimes where you need a backbone in the butt section, and that's where your gear rods come in handy, but when you need to throw light, I love the big bend in a good float rod.

Re: Skykomish; how high is too high?
Just an update, I finally hooked one up real good on the Skykomish! Didn't land it but damn it felt nice to actually finally have one grab my jig and run! Now let's see... July 4th, is my next fishing day, and this time I'll land the bastard!
