Pontoon Boats Are Not A New Concept

I found this picture of an early pontoon boat. The idea has been around for a long time. The guy even had a motor mount on it. (Board is missing)

I found the photo on the www.weatherunderground.com web site photo section(great site for weather and photos). It was taken in Kansas on an old abandoned farm that had a pond on the land and the boat was setting next to the pond. Most likely the owner had walleyes in the pond. You don't normally troll for perch.

I was trying to put an age on this homemade invention and it is kind of hard to come up with a date. Plywood was used on a regular basis in the 30's & 40's. I don't know when galvanized pipe came into common use. Maybe there is a plumber out there that can shed some light on that.

What are the pontoons made from, maybe some kind of tank?

The great Persian King Xerxes (I always loved that name and wanted to use this moniker to identify my son when he was born several decades ago, but my wife put up such a fit that I had to regroup and figure out another favorite name to use) used pontoons strapped together in a very long assembly to allow his army to cross the dardenelles and launch a surprise attack on the Greeks back about 2300 years ago or so.... this crossing set the stage for the battle of Thermopylae, an historical event glorified recently in the movie "300".....

I think the tanks are from an old steam heating system. I tried calling my plumber to look at it but he is gone. When he does, I'll let you know.
