Frog Color?
I am curious of what color and types of frogs everyone is using. It seem like such a huge selection and dont my funds filling my tackle box with colors that are not going to produce in this area.
'course they don't have biscuits and gravy ... but if they did, I bet everyone would eat there.

I think as with most topwaters color isnt that much of a factor. Thats my opinion though. If you get one, get the yellowhead/black body.

I've had good success with green pumpkin Horny Toad and Strike King Rage Toads. I tend to use them more often than hollow-bodied frogs around here.

I personally Add my own color to my frogs . I use a sharpie marker and apply many coats to get the color just right , Its takes about a one week process for the color to set properly ..
I try my best to customize most of my Baits right out the package and the advantage to doing so gives the fish a new look at a bait that many anglers show them on a regular bases ... As far as results are concerned , let the fish answer that question for you ....

Well since I havent yet started with the frog the confidence isnt there yet .. but thanks for the tip on color bpm.

I only have one...a hollow body Scum Frog...green in color

I'm gonna have to agree with Sonnn that color probably doesnt matter too much. I have a few different colored frogs and they all get bit - its more weight/profile than the color, UNLESS you are working the frog open water then it might come into play. Since you are worried about what works "up here", green/white/brown/black all have been bit.
Also, when swinging on a frog bite, sometimes it helps to have a brightly colored frog on so YOU can see whats going on, not so much for the bass. Setting the hook on a frog is an art Ive not yet mastered but sometimes I've found it helpful to have a lighter frog on so I can see if it disappeared or not before swinging.

In my past bass'n experience i would have to differ with you on color being a non-factor ...I base my color on the day and cover, partly cloudy , rain , wind .. all this plays a key role on how a bass views your bait .. Color has nothing to do with the hook set , Thats all in your Line ..Once the bite takes place i instantly look away from fish and zoom in on my line , once i see it take off , well you know the rest .. alot of anglers have a hard time looking away from the "splash" and thats were the motivation to set the hook comes from (too soon , too bad!) ...I notice the That Micheal Bennett caught most of his fish in the FLW championship on the frog , Also noticed that he use three different frogs to do so ....BTW when i paint my frogs im only painting the belly and leggs , like you said nothing else matters ... So when you move a frog across a thick mat of cheese and pads, you think the bass can see the color of your frog? Its a silhouette at best over that stuff. And if you read a little closer, I noted the color was for indication on whether the frog had disappeared (into the bass' mouth, for example) - I don't think anyone thinks the color has anything to do with how you set the hook lol. I toss frogs,..I love 2 toss frogs,..I've yet 2 land a Bass on my frogs,..I have many different color frogs,..my favorite is Manns,..I love frogs,..I've had my frogs hit,..2 excited,..Bass bit the legs off my frog,..I like tossing them in the soup and salad in the early morning hours!

There is no magic formula for when to set the hook after a frog strike. There are certain times when it is appropriate to swing right away and other times where watching your line or "feeling the fish" is the best option. Factors such as the density of the cover you are fishing, the explosiveness of the strike, the size of the fish (if it can be determined) and the type of frog are all things that should be taken into consideration when determining how quickly to pull the trigger. It needs to become second nature because you can't get over anxious, nor can you hesitate too long or second guess yourself. There really is an art to it and you must develop that "feel". It can't be taught, only learned from time on the water.
As far as color goes, just like most things in bass fishing, sometimes it matters and sometimes it doesn't.

Profile and action of a frog bait is what I consider first. I feel color doesn't play much of a role in most situations. Bass are only seeing from the underside and most of the time at an angle due to their field of vision and position. Best thing to do is just get a natural looking frog bait. Most frogs undersides are white, green or yellow so you can't go wrong with either of those colors.
Nothing like actually looking like the real thing. If you are really concerned with the color of the bait here are all the species of frogs that are in Washington. Washington Frog Species Just so you can get an idea of colors.
Sure would like to know when that first top water frog explosion happens for ya BnG. Good luck out there and let us know.

I am looking forward to that frog explosion also. last weekend I was using a Yamamoto Kreature as a pseudo frog running it over the cover and one crushed it from below ... I was in shell shock and didnt set the hook in time or did it too quick ... seems the whole thing is kinda a blur ... laughs!

Hey Jay, I have about 5 or 6 colors that I use regularly. Next time we're fishing together, remind me and I'll give you some to try out and see which ones you like the best.
I have black with red flake and that seems to work best in low-light conditions (for me, at least). I also have a pumpkinseed/yellow that I prefer to throw into thin pads and work back quickly across the top. I bet you'd have some success with either of those at Lake in the Weeds in the early spring before those thick pads take over the water.

That's what I was doing at your secret lake that night. I was working frogs and worms both across the top and couldn't even get a look. I got my first frog bite in teh early summer. HUGE explosion by the pads. Of course set the hook too early. It was a green frog that I just worked across some pads super slow.
If you guys end up hitting the lake give me a call. I should have the next few weekends off.
