RE:does it ever pay to not match the hatch?
I fish lakes almost exclusively and it is usually with a fly set up. I typically will troll with woolly buggers & leech patterns. I would say that if you really want to be prepared to catch fish, learn to fish chironomids. Personally I have not had the patience for it, but have seen a lot of people ...

RE:Fly Tying Kits
Lots of good advice from everyone here. Basically my philosophy when I started was get a basic kit and build from there. you find out really quick which materials you need to tie the flies you want. The Cabela's kit is a great starter kit. I wouldn't worry too much at first because inevitably if you...

RE:Fishing from a Canoe
Thanks for the help guys, I will probably get a serious boat for the strait in about 2 years as my Dad is building a cabin up there. I have heard of quite a few people fishing the kelp beds for rock fish from a kayak which you can not do with a regular boat because the kelp would tear up the motor. ...

Fishing from a Canoe
Lately I've been giving a lot of thought to selling my inflatable Achilles raft and getting a canoe instead. The raft has been great for 4 years now. It can pack down pretty small if it needs to and 1 person can manage it ok. Better yet it stores really well. However I've thought about getting a can...

RE:Kayak, Float Tube, Or Pontoon Boat
I would suggest a pontoon style float tube for what you described. They over the advantage of better manuverability than a traditional float tube but the portability that you will not get from a pontoon boat. Fishcats are pretty nice but I think Caddis makes one too that will not break the bank ($15...

RE:oddest thing ever pulled from a fish stomach
I found 5 salamanders in an alpine lake trout once, that was a little odd. Tried fishing with salamanders at the same lake the next year and didn't have any luck. I could see a fish gulping down 1 or 2, but 5 was a bit much I thought.

RE:How to use flies without fly fishing
Dido what KTK said about the lead core line. A buddy of mine tried that with wooly buggers early this season at Alice and knocked em dead. I have also used the bobber and fly method described with decent success in mountain lakes but rarely in lowland lakes. Some times using split shot and a long le...

Pine Lake gate
Does anyone know what time the gate at Pine Lake opens up? I remember a few years back showing up early only to find the gate didn't open till 7am. Does anyone know what time it opens in the morning? My friend and I are going tomorrow AM and would like to use the boat launch early (6am). Any informa...
