you can try a axe or a ice chisel ( a heavy bar like a tankers bar ) make sure you tie a tether on it would be a shame to throw any thing down the first hole through the ice. also check that if there is a reg. about hole size so people don't fall in and get hurt thats why the augers are only about 8...
