Vancouver Is. Spring Report

Spring is definitely in the air on the Island. The last couple of weeks, we have had some great weather and some great fishing to go with it. Salmon fishing has been very consistent. Constance bank and Whirl bay have been good. The west drop off on the bank have been best on the ebb tide. G-Force spoon in no bananas color and coyote spoon in blueberry muffin have been my top lures. Small herring have been reliable when the bite slows down. Glow green, silver green, glow purple and the Welsey flasher have been working well.
Halibut started off a little slow in some of the regular spots out west around Race rocks and the mud flats. After a couple trips I started to fish Border bank with great results. The average size of the fish seems to be a bit larger this year, with fish in the 30-50 lb range on average. Herring has been getting most bites, with octopus and salmon heads not far behind. I have been running the new boat, a 2550 pursuit that I put a new 300 Mercury Verado on. This is an amazing guide boat with a wide open cock-pit for fishing and is a very smooth ride in choppy water. This will be Guide Wade Welch’s new ride for the summer season.
With the summer ramping up I am pretty excited to get up to the lodge and finish some of the renovations that have been taking place. We have put in a new fish processing area, new carpets in the rooms and added a few touches to the kitchen to make Chef Brimblecombes days a little easier.
DFO reports that we are expecting one of the largest returns of Chinook along the west coast of Vancouver Island this season in the last decade. For those of you that know how great our fishery is already, you can understand the magnitude of this statement. We are expecting 80% of these fish to be four year olds, giving us a larger size average fish than the past few years. We are going to have openings in areas that we have not been able to fish in a decade. I am extremely excited to hear this great news!

Do not miss out on a season for the history books. I have a few spots left to fill for this season. June 21-23, 25-27 and July 16-18 that I am filling at a great sale price. Give me a call to go over the details of this world class fishing adventure. I look forward to seeing all the familiar faces soon and meeting some new ones.
