Break Time!

by The Troutist, August 08, 2013

Here it is the first of August already the weather is starting to cool down a bit and salmon season is here. I have already logged in more road miles and worked lakes and rivers for trout and steelhead than I had planned. I am over budget, beat up, tired, and in need of some rest. I have been told more than once this year that I need to slow down and I am constantly reminded that I am not 50 anymore. So it looks like I will be taking a couple of weeks off the water and addressing the honey-do list. This list is quite sizeable and I fail to see where all this rest is going to come from. The excuse of not being 50 anymore doesn’t apply when it comes to the list.

Looking ahead at my schedule starting the middle of August through the end of October maybe she is right I need a break. I have numerous road trips planned covering many miles and in most cases they are one day trips in search of trophy trout and salmon. That means getting on the road at o-dark-thirty and hopefully home before dark. I look back on the folks I have had the opportunity to angle with, the waters I have worked and it definitely puts a smile on my face.

This year I have had the opportunity to angle with guides Bruce Warren of Fishing For Fun Guide Service (253-208-7433), Doug Dosch of River’s Edge Guide Service (253-350-2884), and Zack Larsen of Larson Outdoor Adventures (360-701-3871), and Robin Ruel of Game On Guide Service (360-708-1770). I have had the pleasure of being on the water with Bobby Loomis the National Sales Rep for Mack’s Lure, Johnnie Candle a World Champion Walleye Angler, Local Legend Steve Buckner of Maple Falls, Mike Carey of WashingtonLakes.Com and recently the US Army Hunting and Fishing Team. Not a bad group of guy’s to hang out with.

This year the guests on my boat have been Josh Breyfogle, Steve Buckner, Kevin Bye, Kelly Riordin, Paul Claxton, and of course my brother Brett who I don’t consider a guest but my angling partner. Brett has covered many miles and lakes with me and knows I am a grouchy old man and doesn’t get too excited if I am a little testy. If I am looking at new lakes to work I can assure you Brett is my choice to have with me. We have worked so many different lakes together that we can just look at each other and know what the other is thinking. It is very nice to have a partner like that working the water with you.

I have covered the Puyallup Outdoors Show, shot a DVD with Mike Carey and Bruce Warren, given seminars, and I was heavily involved in the JBLM Outdoor Expo. The amount of time and work that went into this project is beyond words. The one great thing that I got out of this was meeting a fantastic group of folks. So I guess looking back on this year so far maybe a little rest is in order, although looking at the honey-do list I’m not seeing any rest.

So until next time may your next trout be your trophy mount.
