This usually turbid Snake River reservoir of nearly 14,000 acres might be Oregon's (and Idaho's) best warmwater fishery. Probably will suffer in the future due to water release practices mandated by salmon recovery programs. As many as two million crappie (both black and white) have been pulled from Brownlee in a single season in the recent past. Crappies weighing at least two and a half pounds are usually taken each season. Also furnishes good to excellent fishing for smallmouth bass and channel catfish and recently held the Oregon record for smallmouth bass with fish weighing six pounds and 14 ounces. Currently holds the Oregon and Idaho state records for flathead catfish with fish weighing 42 and 58 1/2 pounds respectively. Also recently held the Oregon bullhead catfish record with a three pound six ounce fish. Giant bluegills may be the lunker fishery of the near future as many 10 to 11-inch fish are now taken. Bait anglers also catch many large rainbow trout each year. Other species present include white sturgeon, largemouth bass, yellow perch, pumpkinseed sunfish and carp.
